TheSouth China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO) was founded in 1959. It is oneof the largest marine research institutes in China.
TheSCSIO endeavors to conduct in-depth research on the regional and global oceans, especially in the South China Sea (SCS) and its reef islands. Researchdirections include physical oceanography, marine geology and geophysics, biogeochemistry, and ecological resources. The strategic themes of the SCSIOinclude marine ecological safety and green development, ocean-land-atmosphereinteractions, and their impacts on the Earth’s environment. The SCSIO provides environmentalsupport for marine ecosystem safety and sustainable development of reef islandsin the SCS. We focus on marine ecological conservation and civilization toensure an environmentally friendly SCS by achieving breakthrough discoveries infrontier marine sciences and developing innovative ocean technologies. The SCSIOis dedicated to building cutting-edge platforms to foster world-class researchon tropical oceans, attracting international talent, promoting high-techknowledge transformation, and developing an internationally recognized andirreplaceable research center for tropical oceanography.
